The Nicola brand owes its origin to Lisbon’s emblematic Café Nicola. In the early 1800’s, this café was the meeting place for politicians and writers, especially the poet Bocage.

From the beginning, the café’s owners wanted to offer their own coffee blend. Beans from Brazil and from Sao Tome and Principe were roasted at specialised companies and sold under the Nicola name.

As time went by, the Nicola coffee brand made its way to shops throughout the country. The Nicola coffee’s popularity, the emergence of new habits and demands for higher coffee quality made it necessary to control all production stages.

The ideal spot was found in Lisbon’s outskirts for a coffee processing plant. At the plant in Venda Nova, different package types were studied and new blends were gradually perfected. Industrial production began for a wide variety of blends without diminishing product quality. In the early 90s, Nicola pioneered a new concept through its Nicola Gourmet blends to satisfy true coffee lovers.

In late 1999, Nutrinveste acquired the Nicola brand. More recently, in 2006, Nutricafés was acquired by the investment fund Explorer Investments/MCH.

The brand’s main goals are to modernise production, to create distinct and innovative products, such as Suave (October 2003), and to prepare youthful and daring campaigns that increase its public recognition. It also launches products in the Horeca channel to distinguish it from its competitors, as is the case of Nicola Premium (January 2004).

Always developing innovative brands and always maintaining an emphasis on quality and flavour, in October of 2004 Nicola also launched a new range of coffees consisting of two distinct blends: Nicola Selecto and Nicola Mundi. Carefully selected by Nicola, these new blends stand out, respectively, for their sublime aroma and exotic flavour. This new Gourmet range is a discovery for the senses and brings the exoticism, sophistication, delicacy and distant origins of the best coffees to the consumer’s home.
